Zachary Alan Bourg Scholarship in Physics Research

Selection Criteria:
1.) To initially obtain the award, the student must be a
freshman, enrolled full-time, and majoring in physics at
Southeastern.
2.) First-time freshmen applicants and freshman
applicants with fewer than the equivalent of 12 semester
credit hours of college/university-level course work
completed:
a.) Minimum ACT composite score of 26.
b.) Minimum high school GPA of 3.5.
c.) Successful completion of rigorous math and science
classes while in high school.
All other freshmen applicants:
a.) Minimum college/university GPA of 3.0.
b.) Successful completion of rigorous math and science
classes at the college/university-level.
3.) Preference will be given to eligible applicants with
demonstrated involvement in science or math outside of the
classroom, with greater weight given to demonstrated
involvement in physics.
Retention: A student may retain the award for a
maximum of eight (8) semesters, as long as eligibility
requirements are met. Those requirements will be provided
at the time of the initial award and are as follows:
1.) Must remain a full-time student majoring in Physics
at Southeastern.
2.) Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
3.) Must continue to conduct Physics research in
collaboration with/under the mentorship of a Physicist.
(Each year, the recipient must submit a progress report to
the selection committee, at which time, the committee will
determine if the recipient may or may not retain the award
for the next fiscal year.)
1.) First-time freshman applicants and freshman

a.) Offcial ACT scores.
b.) Official high school transcripts.
All other full-time freshmen applicants:
a.) Official college/university transcripts.
2.) An essay that addresses the student’s:
a.) Reasons for majoring in Physics.
b.) Interests within Physics.
c.) Prior involvement in physics, science in general,
or math outside of the classroom.
3.) Two (2) letters of recommendation.
